Plant of the Month: Coneflower

Each month, Native Edible Designs highlights one of our favorite native plants. These are plants we often suggest to clients and have planted in our own yards because of their beauty, ecological benefits, and rich history on this land.

Echinacea, “Coneflower” derives its latin name from the Greek word ekhinos, meaning "hedgehog" because of its spiky center.

This native flower comes in many colors including red, yellow, pink, and white. We suggest leaving their stalks standing in the winter, since their seed heads provide a wonderful food source for birds. Coneflower was used medicinally by Native American as a treatment for coughs, colds, insect and snake bites, burns, and more.
