Plant of the Month: Bee Balm

Each month, Native Edible Designs highlights one of our favorite native plants. These are plants we often suggest to clients and have planted in our own yards because of their beauty, ecological benefits, and rich history on this land.

As its common name suggests, Monarda “bee balm” is a favorite of pollinators including bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Bee balm’s seeds are also a food source for birds in the winter months. Its vibrantly bright flowers come in white, purple, red, and pink. Part of the mint family, bee balm’s flowers and leaves are deliciously fragrant. This plant is easy to grow and spreads quickly. It prefers full sun and moist, well drained soil. One of our absolute favorites!
